Regional Juried Art Exhibit
January 22 - February 21
Opening Reception - Friday, January 22, 5-7pm
This exhibit has received quite a response from area artists. Over 80 entries were recieved from 40 artists, both members and non members alike submitted up to three entries each. Entries were accepted from artist who residing in Berrien, Van Buren, Allegan, Ottawa, Kent, Barry Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Cass counties. A great success for the Art Center's first ever regional juried exhibit. The excitment and engery generated by this exhibit make it well worth all the work.
The entries took many forms and encompass many mediums including; oil, watercolor, clay, photography, jewelry, and sculpture. After the jury process a total of 30 works were accepted to the show and are on display in our lower gallery until February 21. At the opening reception held January 22 from 5-7pm the jurors selected 1sr, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners.
First Prize, $500 was awarded to Gail Potocki for her oil on linen painting Angel, congratulations Gail.
Second Prize, $250 was awarded to Laurel Kuehl for her pastel "Midwest Sky", which also sold the night of the opening.
Thrid Prize, $100 was awarded to Charles Spreitzer for his mixed media piece Loosely Constructed, which incorporates butterfly wings. And we must add here that one young opening reception goer had to ask Charles if he in fact "killed the butterflies to get their wings". In case you are wondering now, Charles does not kill the butterflies for his pieces.
People packed the lower gallery and lobby for the opening reception of this first Annual Regional Juried Show. We hope the show continues to draw in new and interested artists and from here we want to see it grow. Thank you to all of the artists who participated - with out you we would not have an exhibit.
Of course we could not have pulled this exhibit together without our jurors. We chose three jurors to select the entries and the final awards. Our Jurors were, Brenda Snipe BFA, MFA, currently on staff at Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University, Paul Flickinger BFA, MFA currently on staff at Western Michigan University Gwen Frostic School of Art, and Bill Mayer BFA, MFA currently on staff at Hope College. Thank you so much for your time and help in preparing us for our first juried exhibit. Bill you have been especially helpful throughout this process, thank you for your guidance.
The next Regional Juried Art Exhibit will be in January 2011 - it is not too early to start preparing. Entries are limited to artists living in the 9 counties listed above and must be of 18 years of age and older.
